ATTENTION: The indefinite detention of Americans under the NDAA and the Patriot Act is happening in the psychiatric ward.
Mr. President Barack Obama,
The Honorable John Boehner, United States House of Representatives, and fellow members of Congress.
I understand the nature for National Security and that the Patriot Act was designed to protect Americans at home. We don’t want an unpredictable demographic of people shooting up a school or setting off a home made bomb, but this repeated medical incarceration (automatic involuntary commitment to psych ward) has cost me more than 9 months of my life, shut away from my family, my career and my social life.
I’ve faced innumerable interruptions to my career, and horrible, horrible treatment from doctors, nurses and orderlies.
First of all, this whole experience has been extremely expensive–not only in terms of lost wages, lost personal time, or extremely expensive medical bills, but also a cost on my dignity and privacy as an American Citizen.
Secondly, there has been a toll exacted on my physical body that can never be repaired. In the last 12 years I have racked up over 45 weeks of time spent held against my will in various and sundry psychiatric wards all over the United States. I’ve been wrestled to a bed, arms and legs twisted askew and locked with a padlock overnight. Endless hours spent in straightjackets, strapped to stretchers and humiliating periods of time spent in the “quiet room,” for all the times I spoke up against the institution for locking me away when I have done no crimes.
Scrubs to keep my body cold and submissive, Psychological intimidation by doctors who threaten and discipline patients with forcible injections (I kid you not, they hold you down) and drugs that provide only chemical apathy, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disorder.
I’m very well aware now of the law, and WHY the law, and that I’m not the only Schizophrenic who is subject to the law. BUT I’d like to not have to pay for medical services that have been mandated by the state. I’d like some compensation for a dozen years of my lost art career, due to the suppressive action of the medications that don’t fulfill the promise.
A dozen interrupted years of false starts, initiated by well-meaning friends and relatives who think that psychiatry serves the mental health and well- being of the consumer, and then carried out further each time I seek treatment at an Emergency Room for non-psychiatric purposes. (which is to say, there have been countless times I called for help for non-psych reasons and have been forced into the psych ward on indefinite and ambiguous “charges.”)
On Tuesday, December 17th, 2013, Glaxo Klein announced changes to its global sales and marketing practices to remove “individual sales targets” and to “end direct payments to healthcare professionals for speaking engagements or attendance at medical conferences…” Their target date to achieve this would be by the start of 2016.
Financial incentives to doctors. It becomes clear to me that patients are the product being sold to the doctors, and to be coerced into paying for involuntary treatment s, you can see how much the person with a psych diagnosis pays the price.
I’m ready for the new science of this neurological mutation of speech and hearing centers to be the new paradigm.

I’m ready for more moderate drugs like cannabis for anxiety and PTSD. I’m ready for the helping professions to return to their motive to relieve suffering and confusion–stop the payouts, the financial incentives that make psych patients seem like low-hanging fruit.
Stop forcing us to buy medical products and services that we don’t want and can’t use. Stop hurting us when we come to you in distress. Stop bleeding us dry along the way to National Security.
Bagging and Tagging a psych patient is becoming a sport amongst doctors, condoned and enforced by law and “policy.” Stop making us small fry pay out so hard in the name of Anti-Terrorism.
